Shannen Fernandes

As a psychology intern at a rehabilitation centre for drug and alcohol addiction, I was exposed to various types of drugs and how addiction can impact one's life. It expanded my knowledge on how serious addiction is and how psychology can help to overcome this. I held group sessions with the patients discussing ways to overcome addiction and preventive measures for possible relapse. I was fortunate to attend and assist in Art therapy sessions held by an RCI approved art psychologist which helped me gain insight into the power of art therapy. I also got the opportunity to hold 1-on-1 sessions with my patient who suffered from alcohol addiction. I helped him navigate the main cause of his addiction and come up with interventions to get back to his life. During this process, I came across a few relationship issues faced and learned how couple therapy is essential. This helped me realise that fighting addiction is not a one man show. I am proud to say that he is till date on the path of soberity.
